One punch leaves man with jail time

PUNCHING a man in the head and leaving him unconscious has left a Proserpine man with six months imprisonment.

Civilian prosecutor Chris Bennett said on November 24 at 1am, Daniel Murphy William Tyson Panschow, 25, was involved in a disturbance at Abell Point Marina when police were called.

When officers arrived, Panschow and the victim turned to face officers before Panschow struck the man on the left hand side of his head with a closed fist, causing the man to hit his head on the concrete and fall unconscious.

Duty lawyer Cleo Rewald said on the night, Panschow left the safe night precinct with his uncle when a group of teenagers started yelling towards them. Ms Rewald said Panschow felt he was being ganged up on and thought the victim was coming over to hit him.

She said Panschow had asked another person nearby to ring police when he felt intimidated.

Magistrate Simon Young said the offence was "particularly nasty”.

Panschow was given immediate parole and was banned from the Airlie Beach safe night precinct for 12 months.
