Toddler in hospital after pet attacks
UPDATE: An 18-month-old boy was in a stable condition following an attack by a rottweiler at his grandparents' home in Springfield Lakes.
The child sustained serious facial injuries after he was bitten on the head during the attack at 9.40am at Vesta Cl.
The child was taken by ambulance to the Mater Children's Hospital.
Neighbours reported hearing screaming coming from the family's home after the incident.
Residents of the street were left visibly upset by the attack on the young child.
The dog was seized by Ipswich City Council after the incident and was put down on Wednesday by council officials.
Council's Health and Regulation Committee chairman Cr Andrew Antoniolli said it was a shocking incident.
He said the dog was surrendered by its owners to council and it did not have a history of attacks with council.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the child and his family, who are obviously quite distraught at this time," he said.
Cr Antoniolli said the attack was a timely reminder that parents should be wary of their pets.
"It's one of the things we see all too often. All we can ask parents to do is be vigilant.
"It's a reminder to us that even dogs our children are very familiar with ... it can turn very nasty."
He said council was not aware of the circumstances that led to the attack.
