Only one driver caught

WHITSUNDAY Police Sergeant Michael Sweeney said the number of drink drivers in the past week has been unusually low.

“Finally the message is getting through,” he said.

The only driver to be caught between June 2-8 by Whitsunday Police was a 22-year-old male Korean tourist who recorded a BAC of 0.094 at 4am on Sunday.Police intercepted the man as he was driving on Shute Harbour Road, Airlie Beach.

Sergeant Sweeney said these unusually low numbers were very good for the Whitsundays.

But he also said the reduced drink driver numbers could be caused by fall in tourism and possibly the colder weather prompting residents to stay indoors.
