Op shop needs donations
STAFF at the Whitsunday Neighbourhood Centre (WNC) are calling for donations of goods to be sold at the centre's op shop.
WNC executive officer Mike Peippo said money generated by the op shop was vital for funding the centre's community programs, particularly since Government funding had been cut.
"Basically before Christmas, we've expended a lot of funding, not only with bills, but also with emergency relief," Mr Peippo said.
"Now, in 2013, we've lost approximately $60,000 in Government funding and the neighbourhood centre wants to keep running its programs at full capacity, so we have to find other ways of making that happen," he said.
Mr Peippo said one of the ways the centre could increase its cash flow was to have a better turnover in the op shop and shed.
"So the more goods we get in the more we can sell." WNC volunteer co-ordinator Maureen Niebling said, adding that all goods were on-sold at a "very reasonable price" as another way of helping the community.
"There's a lot of families here on low incomes that need somewhere to go to buy affordable goods," Ms Niebling said.
The centre accepts items such as clothing, furniture, bedding, white goods and kitchen equipment. Items need to be in a reasonable condition that other people can use.
"Basically if you would have it in your home, it's suitable," Ms Niebling said.
The centre also offers a free pick-up service for those people who would like to donate goods but do not have the ability to drop them off. For more information phone 4946 7850.
