Operation Ushanka stops 752 vehicles

THIRTEEN police officers from Road Policing Command and the Stock Squad joined forces with Proserpine Police to launch operation Ushanka on Friday.

The operation set up adjacent the northbound lane of the Bruce Highway near Lethebrooke, 12km south of Proserpine.

During the one-day operation 752 motorists were intercepted and submitted to roadside RBTs.

Seventeen infringements were issued including several motorists charged with criminal offences including possession of dangerous drugs and two people with positive drug saliva tests.

Sergeant Mark Flynn of the Proserpine Police said it was pleasing that so few motorists were charged on Friday.

Operation Ushanka was run in conjunction with district command and targeted the fatal five - speeding, drink and drug driving, failure to wear a seatbelt, driving while fatigued and distracted driving - on a stretch of road that has been a focus for Queensland Police.

Sgt Flynn said the next traffic operation to be conducted by the Proserpine Police would coincide with the school holiday period in June.
