Our beach judged one of the best

IT'S official, Fraser Island is one of the most desired locations on the face of the earth.

At least, that is what the renowned international magazine National Geographic says.

The widely read title recently compiled a book entitled The 10 Best of Everything: An Ultimate Guide for Travellers.

One category in the guide was the 10 best beaches on the planet, and the only Australian location to make the prestigious list was Fraser Island.

The world heritage listed site came in at number seven.

Fraser Island made a splash with renowned holiday destinations including the Seychelles, Maldives, Bora Bora in Tahiti and St Bart's Island in the Caribbean.

Fraser Island was the only Australian beach recognised in the list, beating other coastal icons Bondi, Coolangatta and Kirra.

Describing Fraser Island, the magazine wrote:

Perched on the sunny Queensland coast 161 miles (259km) northeast of Brisbane, Fraser Island is the world's largest sand island and home to a wonderful beach.

This World Heritage Site is an ecologist's dream, with 640 square miles (1664sq km) of unspoiled natural paradise.

Rainforests with 1000-year-old trees sprout from the sand. Lodgings here accommodate a wide range of tourists, from the backpacking ecology lover to pampered resort fans.
