Our Masters get pipped at the post
SWIMMING: On Saturday the Whitsunday Masters Swim Club hosted a sanctioned short course swim carnival at the Cannonvale Pool.
Over 40 swimmers took part, with participants coming from as far afield as Gladstone, Noosa, Maryborough, Townsville and Mackay to compete.
Club president Bob Corskie said: "The carnival was very successful and all the swimmers had an enjoyable day."
Local swimmers Amanda McPhillips, Glenn McKerley, Mark Erickson, Andrea Mitchell, Di O'Donnell and Kay Corskie all swam extremely well, taking out first place in their age groups.
Guest swimmer Christie Leet proved he is not just a distance swimmer, but a very competitive sprinter as well.
Leet won all his events and did some impressive times, with one of his best swims being the 25m freestyle (13.92sec).
Robert McKay was in a very tough age group, compiled of seven competitive swimmers.
Cheryl West swam very well and was awarded a bronze medal in her age group.
West and McKay swam extremely well in the 50m backstroke, recording 1.21.09 and 58.56s respectively.
Although the Whitsunday Masters swimmers were placed in the top of their age groups and took out top points, the North Mackay Sinkers Masters Swim Club achieved the highest points.
Former local swimmer, 91-year-old Margaret Cunningham, was expecting to set some more records on Saturday, but was only able to race twice because of illness.
The club thanks all their officials, volunteers and Rob Lee and Theresa Manning from the Cannonvale Cannons for their help.
