Our Whitsunday FC continues to shine
SOCCER: The Whitsunday Football Club Premier Men continued their run of wins making it four from four this season after an emphatic 3-1 win over City Brothers on Saturday night.
Despite the early domination in possession, Brothers took an early advantage against the run of play and took the lead after 15 minutes.
It didn't take long for WFC to bounce back and led by captain Jayden Tween, they turned their dominance into goals. The equalizer came from Jordan White, who scored with a thunderous strike from well outside the box.
Whitsunday took a 2-1 lead to the break after Michael Lee scored from a corner just before half-time.
Both sets of players put bodies on the line as the game resumed and it wasn't until 20 minutes to go before Owen Hodgen put the result beyond doubt with another long-range missile.
Michael Lee was the standout in a game of physical strength and cunning. He along with Sam Reynolds were solid in defence and not afraid to take their opponents on.
Anthony Nobilia, player with the MCL squad was impressed with this week's win.
"Another great win by the boys who are showing a great understanding and awareness. These guys are gaining momentum with each game and the training sessions are improving each week," he said.
Reserves
The reserve men came from 4-0 down after 25 minutes to bounce back and snatch a 5-5 draw against a depleted City Brothers side.
Captain Richard Draper played a super-hero role scoring two goals in the second half to lead his men back from the brink of disaster.
After the early onslaught, Rhodri Jones put WFC on the scoreboard with the first goal, followed by a great finish by Joe Fletcher who found the target after some wonderful lead-up play.
Whitsunday suffered another blow early in the second half after conceding a fifth and at 5-2 any other team would have given up. The positive attitude by the captain inspired a comeback rarely seen on any playing field.
Draper scored twice on either side of player/coach Nathan Sothmann's goal with a terrific header to score the equalizer from a corner to complete the amazing feat.
"Playing in this one I never felt as though we were out of the game. The boys really showed unity when the chips were down, despite some early negativity, which is understandable at 4-0 down," Nobilia said.
"My hat goes off to Richard who really led as a captain should and well done to all the boys for never giving up. Well done all."
MCL Men
The MCL men were soundly beaten by City Brothers, in a game which was always going to be tough with many of the regular players unavailable through injury or otherwise.
Women
Two games in as many days took its toll on a women's side that is still finding its feet in a tough combined division.
Two-nil down at the break the home side ran away with the match to continue their dominant form.
They backed that up with another great showing against one of the front running teams.
"Two solid games despite the losses showed nothing but the willingness to compete and mix it with the best teams in the league," Nobilia said.
