Owen’s our hot prospect
FOOTBALL: A young local's star continues to rise in football circles after he was named the region's hot prospect of 2015.
Owen Hodgen won the accolade which recognises young talent at the Mackay Regional Football Zone awards night on Saturday following his stellar season with the Whitsunday Football Club's premier men.
"I was quite surprised, I didn't expect it at all," he said.
"I thought I had a particularly good season not only personally but us as a whole team as well... we should be able to improve next year."
Owen, 17, has been with the club for three years and now cemented himself as a regular fixture in the team, either filling roles at left back or centre-midfield.
The Proserpine State High School student admitted the team didn't achieve what it wanted to in the 2015 season, losing in the first week of finals despite having played in the past two grand finals.
Despite the team falling short in 2015, Owen said he was confident the young team would only get better.
"It's good, it's quite exciting," Owen said of the future.
"The club's encouraged a lot of younger players to go on and do better... it's great they're doing that.
"Next year I think we should be able to bounce back, get into the grand final and win the whole thing."
Owen said he dreams of playing professionally in either Australia or Europe.
In other news, the Whitsunday Football Club will host their presentation night on Saturday at Down Under Bar.
