Owners want their stolen dogs returned
A GREGORY River couple who believe their dogs were stolen on Sunday afternoon are pleading for their return.
Adam and Michelle Playford's two Staffordshire terriers George and Berg were last seen at about 1.30pm.
The dogs had been running around the paddock on the Playford's six-acre property, which is fenced and well set back from the road.
Mr Playford said this was part of their daily routine, but when he called them they did not return.
Earlier that day, Mrs Playford said she thought she heard a car on the family's 300 metre-long driveway, "which is rare, because we're so far back from the road".
The Playfords are now concerned that George and Berg may have been targeted because of their breed.
Mr Playford says if the dogs have been stolen for pigging or hunting, "they're just not that sort of dog".
"They're placid, family dogs and they're much loved," he said.
The Playford's have two young children, Joshua (five) and Hunter (two). Mr Playford says he has not been able to explain to his sons that the dogs are gone. He has reported the matter to police, but just wants the family pets back.
"If the dogs are returned home or dropped off at a vet somewhere that we can get them back to us safely, I don't want to press any charges," he said.
Senior Constable Dominic Cross from the Proserpine Police Station confirmed this was the case.
"We are following a few different lines of enquiries but if the animals are returned the charges are likely to be dropped at the request of the owner and police involvement in the matter will end," he said.
George is red-brown in colour with a white chest and has distinctive scarring on his right front paw from previous surgery. Berg is pure white with black spots on his nose. Both dogs have black collars and are microchipped and registered.
