Paddling to save reef

A SMALL team of kayakers made their way from Airlie Beach to Hayman Island on May 6 to fundraise for the Save the Reef Foundation.

President of the Salty Sea Dogs Fishing Club on Hayman Island and event organiser, Josh Weaver, said the two kayakers, Richard Price and Jimmy Barnes, left Port of Airlie at 6.30am.

"Our first stop was at North Molle Island and we stopped there for a break at the beach and did some fishing along the way," he said.

"We then crossed over to Hook Island and went across the channels and experienced some rough water."

Afterwards, the team continued over the water and stopped at Langford Island before starting the last leg towards Hayman where they arrived at 2.30pm.

Through a donation tin, a total of $294 was raised on the day.

Mr Weaver said he was currently organising the next event.

"We want to keep it low key but we definitely want to mix up our next fundraising paddle."
