Whitsunday Marketing and Development closer to parting ways

WHITSUNDAYS Marketing and Development Limited (WMDL) members have moved one step closer to re-establishing the body as two separate organisations.

The idea behind the move is to allow a new Tourism Whitsundays to form as a solely tourism-focused organisation.

Last week, WMDL members attended a meeting where the official transitional business plan for the new TW was floated and explained by Danielle Krista and Rebecca Nicol.

"We will be creating a great new, dynamic organisation that will be the envy of Queensland," Ms Krista told the crowd.

"We have had a working group dedicated to our organisation's split. This working group was solely focused on progress (and) a lot of collective knowledge has been used," she said.

A new board of 14 people will be formed for Tourism Whitsundays, including seven elected members and five members from different tourism sectors including accommodation, marine, youth, island resorts and tourism transport.

"One member will be the chairman of Tourism Bowen and non-voting positions will be given to representatives from Tourism and Events Queensland, Whitsunday Regional Council and the Tourism Whitsundays CEO.

The existing WMDL legal structure will morph into Tourism Whitsundays.

The economic development arm will set up their own new legal structure and the existing WMDL constitution will be amended to reflect the changes.

"A new document called Tourism Whitsunday Company Rules will be adopted by the members (and) our official changeover day will be Friday, April 1," Ms Krista said.

All current WMDL membership will be transferred to Tourism Whitsundays Ltd.

"The figures we're working from haven't been audited, and it's likely some adjustments will be made," Ms Krista explained.

"These figures were based from our own internal audit in February. We've looked at how much money will go into economic development and how much will go into Tourism Whitsundays Ltd.

"Both entities will sign legal documents to accept their own legal and contractual obligations.

"On April 1, economic development will receive their money."

Ms Krista explained TW was a not-for-profit organisation.

"And in this business if you see a decline of people you see a decline in output," she said.

"I have worked in this organisation and I know we can run off the fumes of an oily rag. We can work to pare things back."
