Party with the ‘parrot heads’ and pirate crew

IT'S time to party with the parrots and pirates next weekend with two big days of festivities for the Shag Islet Cruising Yacht Club Rendezvous.

Saturday is set to get colourful with the Parrot Head Party providing the fun.

Parrot Head and Shagger Phil Soloman said it was all about being care-free and having a good time.

"We are not Parrot Heads because we are Jimmy Buffett fans," he said.

"We are Jimmy Buffett fans because we are Parrot Heads."

Attendees are encouraged to create their own eccentric Parrot Head hat, with the more ornaments the better.

"The funniest thing is when we get people ask 'where do you buy those hats?'," Mr Soloman said.

"You can't buy them, you have to make them."

There will be a prize for the best dressed Parrot Head man and woman, so give it a red-hot go.

Then on Sunday the celebration continues with the Pirate Parley.

"The whole of the Cape Gloucester resort turns into a pirate's den for the day," founder Ken Thackeray said.

Pirate tribute band the Barbary Coasters will provide the tunes for the day, with helicopter flights giving you a first hand look at the fleet from above.

"The helicopter flights are a great way for people to get out and grab a photo of their boat or the fleet, or just to have a look at the wildlife on the water," Mr Thackeray said.

Some scurvy sea dogs will even be made to walk the plank, provided someone coughs up a $200 donation to do the deed.

And enjoying a drink is the pirate and parrot head way so courtesy busses and boats will be running for rendezvous revellers.
