Pat on the back for Whitsunday PCYC

WHITSUNDAY PCYC has received a big pat on the back this week, with two finalists in the central region Awards of Excellence.

The Wild Ones were named in the programs category.

"It's a great thing for the leaders and for the kids that make the program to see a bit of recognition for all the hard work they do," founder Ron Petterson said.

The program aims to expose the kids to new experiences each week, broadening their horizons.

"It's getting them out and about trying new things," Mr Petterson said.

"We're trying to help them build their teamwork and mateship, and to learn new skills."

Mr Petterson, who is chairman of the club, was also named as a finalist for the Keith Henry Club Person of the Year Award.

"That was very humbling," he said.

"Nobody does volunteer community work for recognition, but it is certainly a heartfelt feeling to have your efforts acknowledged."

Mr Petterson said he just wanted to see the region be the best it can be.

"We have such a beautiful place to live," he said.

"I want to make sure these kids and the people that live here have the best opportunities."
