PCYC fight night gets local lad back in the ring

WHITSUNDAY boxer Jake Brown turned up at fight night at the PCYC as a spectator but ended up in the ring pitched against a boxer representing the KO Gym on the Gold Coast.

A last minute no-show meant there was a time slot that needed filling - Brown underwent a ring-side medical, strapped on his gloves and took to the ring in a exhibition match against Trent Duncan.

Brown is coming back in the sport after taking a break to meet study commitments.

Now he has finished school and working he has more time to dedicate to boxing training.

On Saturday night spectators could be forgiven at being a little confused.

The 18-year-old lad from Cannonvale was wearing red and introduced as a Gladstone fighter.

"I went to boarding school in Rocky and I eventually moved to Gladstone to fight for them because they do association (boxing), which makes bigger levels into the Olympics," he said.

Part of the motivation behind the Whitsunday PCYC fight night was to attract a boxing coach to the Whitsundays.

"If they got a coach on board, I would definitely come down. It's hard because you need someone with a lot of experience."

Sam O'Malley is the head coach at the Mackay PCYC and organised the event on Saturday.

"We had a couple of people interested and hopefully in the next couple of months there will be coach at the Whitsunday PCYC," he said.

"The level of competition was good the skill and ability of the kids is developing. The turnout was a bit disappointing due to the lack of local coaches, which we are working on."
