Pelagics-a-plenty for islands
IT'S been a big week for Whitsunday anglers according to local fishing guru Bob Spees.
The islands have seen a decline in trout and grassy sweetlip catches, but the pelagics have made up the difference.
"That's your Spanish mackerel, some cobia and quite a few billfish,” Mr Spees said.
Try targeting Nara Inlet, Dolphin Point and "the oval”.
"There have also been quite a few longtail tuna chasing the garfish,” Mr Spees said.
"Some of these fish are around the 15kg mark.”
For mackerel, there have been good numbers getting caught in close around Pioneer Rocks and Double Cone Island, along with Mackerel Bay on jigs and Edward Island.
"And in the deeper holes there are very good numbers of jewfish being caught,” Mr Spees said.
"They're being caught on fresh squid or ribbonfish slabs.”
Target the deeper holes off Nara Inlet, South Molle Island and Long Island.
Shute Harbour Jetty has recorded some good queenfish on live herring this week, along with school mackerel.
"The best time is early in the morning or just on dusk,” Mr Spees said.
The region's rock walls were working well this week as well.
"The main thing they're getting around there is bluebone,” Mr Spees said.
"They're catching them on whole fresh prawns and crabs.”
Anglers can also target grunter using garfish fillets or peeled prawns.
Mr Spees said the Proserpine River had been fishing well this week.
"The river has been fishing very well for barramundi with a lot of smaller ones starting to show up,” he said.
"Quite a few people have been getting up to five of the smaller ones.”
Mr Spees said while the majority of fish were small "there are bigger ones among them”.
To target the bigger specimens, try using live mullet as usual.
"The smaller ones have been getting caught on soft plastics fishing well up into the snags,” Mr Spees said.
After an extended lull out at the dam, Mr Spees said things were now looking up for anglers there.
"The dam's been fishing okay along the edge of the weed beds,” he said.
The best bet are your Halco and RMG lures.
"They're getting them on three and five metre divers,” Mr Spees said.
Those targeting the main basin however should troll nine metre divers.
"They're sitting deep in the main basin,” Mr Spees said.
"But there have been some nice fish being caught there.”
