Perils of falling coconuts hits home
A BASKETBALL-sized coconut brought home the dangers of the tropical fruit for one Whitsunday resident recently when it fell on her car.
Suzanne Crabtree had parked her car in the driveway of her parents' house and was inside when she and her mum heard an odd-sounding thump. "Normally we can hear them fall on the rocks," she said.
"But this one sounded different and we both looked at each other and didn't really want to look out the window." Alas, look they did and found the coconut had landed smack-bang on her car.
"To be honest, if that was to hit somebody... on the head it would kill them," she said.
"The way it fell and how hard it fell to smash that glass, and it was a big coconut."
The Whitsunday Ratepayers Association is looking at designing a humorous sign to warn people of the danger of falling coconuts for use around the region.
Whitsunday Regional Councillors were briefed on public responses to council's draft coconut management plan on Tuesday.
