Whitsunday Mayor Andrew Willcox is elated that Lake Proserpine/Peter Faust Dam has been selected to host the opening round of the Australian Fishing Championships in November.

Cr Willcox said hosting Series XIII of the championships was a coup for the Whitsunday region.

"The event is the absolute pinnacle of tournament fishing in Australia and the opening round at Lake Proserpine will be televised and promoted nationally, giving wonderful exposure for the region,” he said.

"Only last week I moved a Mayoral Minute that council undertakes a comprehensive Proserpine Sustainability and Future Growth Master Plan including the township area and Lake Proserpine/Faust Dam surrounds.

"On a recent trip to Brisbane, Council and Tourism Whitsundays held productive talks with Sun Water regarding our joint vision for Lake Proserpine and opportunities to improve and expand infrastructure.

"Working in partnership with Tourism Whitsundays, this council is keen to see increased visitation to the Proserpine region.”

Tourism Whitsundays CEO Craig Turner said promoting tourism experiences based around fishing was an opportunity to highlight the natural environment of the Whitsundays and the great diversity of fishing on offer to recreational anglers.
