Petition against sports park site

A PETITION objecting against the proposed site for a future sports park in the Whitsundays has hit the streets today.

A group of people concerned with the proposed purchase of a piece of land at Mt Marlow, owned by Havengrand, have organised for a petition to be circulated around the public that will then be presented to the Queensland parliament.

One of the members of the group, Peter Chengody, said there were three main objections to the Havengrand site which council was currently negotiating to buy.

“Our three main concerns are with the lack of consultation, the cost of the land and the site of the land,” he said.

“A lot of people have been involved in getting this petition together.”

Mr Chengody said that the group was hoping for “thousands” of signatures.

“We really want them within the next week or two,” he said.

“If people are concerned then this is their chance to get involved.”

Mr Chengody said that the petition would be circulated around town through local businesses and at the Airlie markets on Saturday.
