Pick-up lines often fall flat

THE ways of the past may be the way of the future for young men looking to find love in the lead up to Valentine’s Day.

Toowoomba friends Stephanie Cook, 23, Bec Solomon, 22, and Carli Berman, 23, reckon a lot of Toowoomba’s blokes could learn from the courting rituals of generations past.

They are all single and have heard a wide range of pick-up lines, whether through their work as bar tenders at a Toowoomba hotel or while out on the town partying with friends.

“There is no such thing as a good pick-up line,” Miss Cook said.

“They can be alright as an icebreaker though, as long as they are not serious and not sleazy.”

Miss Cook, Miss Solomon and Miss Berman all agreed the best approach was a simple introduction.

“Something like ‘hi, how’s your day’ is a good start,” Miss Berman said.

“They just need to start a conversation,” Miss Solomon added.

Other tips included shaving off the rat’s tail hair styles and being prepared to meet in places other than a bar.

“Guys need to not expect to take you home on a Saturday night,” Miss Berman said.

“They need to work at it, ask you out on a date.”

Miss Cook said classic romantic pastimes such as picnics, flowers and even Sunday drives still held sway with women of the younger generation.

“It needs to be something simple and thoughtful.”
