EIGHT-YEAR-OLD swimmer Piper O'Grady has broken the record in the 100 metre butterfly for her age group at the Whitsunday Swimming Club .
The record has been iron-clad for some 12 years but a couple of weeks ago, Piper showed her strength and smashed through the record time by more than five seconds. Her time was 1:47.93 during club night at the end of October.
The previous record was held by Shay Mealey with a time of 1:54.90 which she set on November 2 in 1998.
Piper's coach Haylee Reddaway said Piper had been working very hard.
“It was a magnificent swim and everything went right,” she said.
“She has also listened to her sister [for tips]”.
Ms Reddaway encouraged swimmers to go along to the club nights where they might, one day, have the chance of breaking records like Piper.
“It is really just a social event getting the kids to experience racing,” she said.
“But it is more of a social event than anything.”
