Plan developed to improve council workplace
A NEW strategy focused on improving Whitsunday Regional Council's workplace culture was adopted today at a council meeting in Bowen.
The Organisational Culture Development Plan aims to improve the internal workplace culture and Mayor Andrew Willcox said it was a "positive step forward for the organisation".
"The continued development and improvement of our organisation's culture is a key priority of this council," he said.
"(And) along with my team of councillors, I look forward to supporting our CEO and staff in creating a positive, unified work environment."
Cr Jan Clifford spoke out in the meeting and said she supported the program and commended Cr Willcox and council's CEO Barry Omundson on their leadership.
Mr Omundson said the Organisational Culture Development Program would position Council to achieve strategic objectives.
"The internal assessment identified that people coming to work in the council highly value respectful and trusting relationships, however they are not experiencing these values in their current environment," he said.
"Staff were positive that into the future they were looking to be part of an environment in which they are empowered to be accountable and experience teamwork both within their immediate teams and across departmental teams."
Mr Omundson said the change in workplace culture wouldn't come overnight but with the support of the mayor and councillors, the shared goal of creating an environment that met the needs of the business and better reflected the value employees was closer in sight.
"The culture which we as a team will be working to create will be underpinned by the core values of accountability, community, trust, unity and continuous improvement; a culture which will empower staff to deliver better outcomes for our community," he said.
