Plants key to happy offices

HEY, all you business owners, bosses and general managers out there.

Do you want to increase productivity in your workplace for a relatively minor cost and have your staff love you for it?

Well, a new concept said to reduce stress and negative feelings, sharpen focus and concentration and improve accuracy could be just what you're looking for.

Dracaena Farm Nurseries' new Office Mates range of indoor plants has hit the market with the ambition of improving the office environment for workers.

It is a goal the nursery's owner/director Bryan Hillier believes so strongly about, he's thrown $70,000 at the concept during the past 18 months to get it off the ground.

"With tough economic times and the high cost of hire plants, companies have taken indoor plants out of their budgets," Mr Hillier said.

"At less than $15 each, we're providing a low-cost option for workplaces to restore their plant/life balance and improve the air and environment in the office.

"They're a real win-win for managers. It's good for staff morale and good for business too."

Dracaena Farm Nursery office and sales manager Bronwyn Hillier has driven the Office Mates concept from its conception.

Ms Hillier selected plants that were not only low maintenance and low care, but that were unusual and created a talking point.

"We're here to make people who think they kill everything realise it's really not that hard," she said.

"The plants are all compact and classy. It's all been done with fun in mind.

"And once you have one, you want to start adding to it.

"They look great in a grouping of three pots.

"It's a little bit addictive."

Ms Hillier utilised an integrated campaign, including the internet, Facebook and smartphone QR tags to market Office Mates, targeting the range at non-traditional customers.

"There's a real need to target people who are not necessarily hardcore gardeners," she said.

"It's about getting them interested in gardening and plants, and also the benefits of having plant life around them."

The Office Mates range is available from Bunnings stores from Lismore to Cairns.
