BARB Adamson believes if you want to help save our delicate marine ecosystem, the solution is easy.

"To me, it's simple - ban the bags,” she said.

"We live on the Great Barrier Reef and they kill the animals.”

Ms Adamson has been actively lobbying against single-use plastic bags for years and in March she sent a submission to Whitsunday Regional Council, including a petition with 2000 signatures.

Despite jumping on board the "ban the bag” campaign, councillors said the process was not as simple as it seemed.

"It either needs to become a local law or a state-wide ban and that's what we're trying to do,” Division 1 Councillor Jan Clifford said.

"We're trying to explore what legislative avenues we could go down.”

But Cr Clifford said the council officers were doing everything in their power to secure legislative back-up to get the job done.

"At the moment, banning the bags would have to be voluntary but we've tried that before and it just didn't work,” she said.

The Whitsunday Regional Council will submit a policy to the Local Government Association of Queensland to include in its conference next month.

But to Ms Adamson, this is yet another unnecessary delay in the process and she thinks it should be made a priority.

"By the time the conference comes around, it will take forever for anything else to be done,” she said.

"I'm not happy about the time frame and it's frustrating - I think they should just do it.”
