Players ready for challenge

RUGBY LEAGUE: The Paul Bowman Challenge is back.

The annual rugby league carnival in Proserpine returns this weekend, with almost 50 under-9 teams set to take part. The Proserpine Sports Complex will host the event on Saturday and Sunday, attracting teams from the Sunshine Coast, Townsville, Gladstone and Rockhampton.

"It's the biggest turnout ever," Proserpine Whitsunday Rugby League's Laney Scott-Young said.

"Last year we hosted 42 teams but this year we received 50 nominations ... but two pulled out."

Competition starts on Saturday from 9.30am, with games held all day long. The fun continues on Sunday from 8.45am when the man himself, Paul Bowman, is tipped to attend. "We're so honoured to have him here. He is our local hero and a champion of the game," Ms Scott-Young said.

The competition also includes the annual Sam Faust Memorial Relay.
