Plenty of coral trout is about

ISLANDS

There have been good numbers of solid coral trout caught around the islands.

The weather is looking favourable, with 10-15knot winds forecast.

There are plenty of Spanish mackerel about, with good reports over last week.

Most of them are getting taken trolling garfish and ribbonfish.

Shute Harbour has seen squid arriving at night.

While during the day, try using live herring to target schooling mackerel.

Queenfish and giant trevally have also been landed.

ROCKWALLS

Around Airlie and down at Whisper Bay, there's some very good grunter being caught.

Try using peeled prawns or garfish fillets on dusk.

Early in the morning they're getting some nice barramundi too.

RIVER

During the small tides over the weekend there was a few salmon and the odd barramundi caught.

But now as the tides are getting larger this week, the river will be a bit harder to fish and you will really have to target your tide changes when the run drops out to fish the deeper areas.

With the larger tides it's a good opportunity to chase the larger muddies and this time of year there is generally a good class of crab around.

DAM

The fishing has certainly slowed up a little over the past fortnight due to a bit of a drop in water temperature.

There's still a few fish getting caught, but the good bite times are more spread out with the cooler water.

However, this weekend we have the full moon coming up so the fishing should improve from about mid-week onwards. Certainly targeting the tide changes will give you the best results.

There's still fish getting caught out in the deeper water as well, but working the shallow weed edges as the morning starts to warm and in the evenings should be a good place to target them.

REEF

Not a lot to report over the last week from the reef.

This coming week building to the full moon will see bigger tides and increased pelagic activity.

Over the next few months, as the water cools, mackerel numbers will increase and it will also be worth targeting juvenile black marlin and sailfish.

Areas off Hayman Island and the Edwards group are good starting points.
