WHITSUNDAY Regional Council, the Department of National Parks, Reef Catchments NRM, Mackay Regional Council, Whitsunday Catchment Landcare, and local land managers, will be conducting a large scale 1080 poisoning campaign on October 23.

Mayor Jennifer Whitney said target areas included sections north, north-east and south-east of the Peter Faust Dam, Proserpine and the Cathu State Forest, and participating properties in the Andromache, O'Connell Rivers and Proserpine Goorganga Plain catchments.

Properties from Thompsons Creek to the Proserpine River and properties within the Gregory River catchment and Conway and Dryander National Parks and State Forests will also be targeted.

Cr Whitney said the aim of this campaign was to reduce the impact of feral pigs and wild dogs, both considered Class 2 pests.

"These animals cause economic and environmental damage throughout the region including direct crop damage, loss of pasture available for grazing and predation on native fauna and flora, [and] pig diggings also impact on catchment water quality," she said.

Bait material will consist of meat injected with 1080 poison.

Baits will be distributed by helicopter over inaccessible areas by vehicle in those places that are accessible.
