Camira man loses his 'Kool' and targets cop's groin

A POLICEMAN was left in agony after a 25-year-old allegedly kneed the officer in the groin and then spat on him.

Benjamin Daniel Kool appeared in Ipswich Magistrates Court yesterday, charged with one count of serious assault of a police officer.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Brad Dick said the incident took place after police had responded to an incident at a house in Camira at 7.30pm on Sunday.

They were trying to detain Kool's younger brother for another matter when Kool allegedly entered the room and became abusive towards the officers.

Sgt Dick said Kool was arrested after he failed to comply with a police direction.

As he was being detained, he allegedly struck out at one of the officers and kneed the policeman in the groin.

The officer was in "extreme" pain and suffered nausea.

Kool was then alleged to have spat at the policeman, the spittle landing in the policeman's mouth and eyes.

Sgt Dick said a further struggle ensued for about 30 seconds before police secured Kool.

Kool was taken to the watch house and charged.

Sgt Dick opposed bail and told the court Kool had a "concerning and violent" criminal history which included offences of robbery and wounding.

"This is a strong case," Sgt Dick said. "The allegations against Kool are serious and if he's convicted he will receive imprisonment."

"He essentially involved himself in this matter that had nothing to do with him."

Since the spit entered the officer's mouth, Sgt Dick said the policeman faced an anxious wait as Kool underwent blood tests for any diseases that may have been passed on.

Magistrate Deborah Vasta noted it had been about five years since Kool was convicted for any crimes.

Kool was granted bail on the condition he report to the Goodna Police Station once a week.

The matter was adjourned to July 8.
