Drunk accused of punching cop, breaking her nose

A GATTON man accused of punching a police woman in the face and breaking her nose has been remanded in custody.

Solomon Islands national Casper Zion Tome, 37, appeared in custody before Toowoomba Magistrates Court yesterday on charges of serious assault of police causing bodily harm and three counts of assault police arising from the incident in Gatton on Friday night.

Police claim Tome was drunk when involved in an altercation at the entrance of a Railway St hotel about midnight Friday.

He is accused of approaching the female officer who twice pushed him away before he punched her in the face without warning.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Natalie Bugden told the court Tome had picked on the only female officer among a group of policemen.

The victim officer was due to see an ear, nose and throat specialist regarding her injuries and police viewed the incident so seriously it had been elected to take the matter by indictment up to the District Court, the court heard.

Should Tome be convicted and receive a penalty of more than 12 months imprisonment it was likely he would be deported back to the Solomon Islands, Snr Const. Bugden submitted.

Duty solicitor Claire Graham, for Tome, said her client instructed he had been in Australia for six years, had permanent residency here and had been married for four years.

Her client instructed he hadn't had a drink of alcohol for three years, but had drunk a bottle of spirits while celebrating his birthday on Friday and couldn't recall the incident, she submitted.

Her client had no previous criminal history at all, Ms Graham told the court.

Magistrate Graham Lee refused bail and remanded Tome in custody to appear before the Ipswich Magistrates Court for committal mention on August 12.
