Police say rising steroid use linked to bikie gangs
DESPITE a law change classifying steroids in the same category as heroin, cocaine and amphetamines, Queensland's anti-bikie taskforce says seizures of the drug have continued to rise.
And researchers say users are just as likely to be white collar workers as athletes or gym junkies.
The state government moved the performance and image enhancing drug (PIED) into the highest category of illicit drugs in August as part of the Safe Night Out strategy.
Taskforce Maxima Detective Inspector Brendan Smith said steroids were increasingly tied to outlaw motorcycle gangs along with drugs such as methylamphetamine.
"Anecdotally, we're seeing more than what we did 12 months ago, whether that's because we are becoming more effective I don't know but we're certainly seeing more seizures," he said.
