Pollies schooled in parliamentary procedures

THE 39 new members of the House of Representatives went back to school yesterday in Parliament House, Canberra.

Speaker Tony Smith and House Clerk David Elder were the teachers, instructing the newbies on procedure and the rules governing parliamentarians.

Mr Smith told the MPs it was an honour to be elected to Federal Parliament.

"This chamber is the arena where the battle of ideas and ideals takes place," he said.

"I want to say, be proud of our democracy."

The orientation continues today and new senators will receive their instructions next week before the new parliament sits for the first time on August 30.
