Ponytail to go to raise funds
MOST people wouldn't dream of shaving their hair off but this will be the reality for long-term Cannonvale resident David Young, who has made it his mission to face the clippers to raise funds for the Prostate Cancer Council of Australia.
Mr Young has been the site manager of Woolworths Petrol Cannonvale for the past two years, and will be shaving his hair at the Airlie Beach Community Markets this Saturday at 10.30am.
"My father is a prostate cancer survivor and one in nine men in Australia will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime," he said.
Mr Young's beloved ponytail is one of his most characteristic features and he is willing to give up almost a decade of growth to encourage men to get checked and seek professional advice.
"I would love to raise $2000 but anything beyond that would be a great achievement," he said.
Donation tins labelled with 'shave the pony' and 'save the pony' can be found at Woolworths Petrol Cannonvale, Beach Library and the Fairburn Bakery in Centro Whitsunday.
It will be a charity tug-of-war, with the most dollars raised delivering the final decision on the day.
"Some people have been donating to save and others to shave. I even donated $50 to save but going on the weights of the tins I think 90 per cent of donations are to shave," he said.
Air Whitsunday Seaplanes has also jumped on board to support the cause with every $5 donated, residents will go into the draw to win a trip to the Great Barrier Reef.
