Power increase for weightlifters

WEIGHTLIFTING: The Whitsunday Weightlifting Club is adding more firepower to its arsenal.

The club will host an introductory powerlifting coaching course on Saturday at its Mt Julian headquarters

Powerlifting comprises three different lifts - a back squat, a dead lift and a bench press - and is considered a sport, hosting world, national and state championships.

"We are very excited to educate our coaches in this strength sport and be able to offer the Whitsunday community the option to do powerlifting at our club in the New Year," Whitsunday Weightlifting Club coach Leanne Knox said.

The sessions will be taken by Damien Horne, who runs Ironclad Powerlifting in Townsville and boasts a wealth of experience in the sport.

"It will complement our Olympic weightlifting program very well and broaden the scope of activities we can offer at our club," Leanne said.

"Anyone interested in trying powerlifting is welcome to come along."

The course begins at 9am and will run until 4pm at the Whitsunday Weightlifting Club gym.

Viewers are also welcome.
