Preparing for world-class event

OUTRIGGER Whitsunday paddlers are preparing for the biggest event in their calendar.

The annual Hamilton Island Cup is only two weeks away and will take place in the Whitsundays on June 16-19.

Whitsunday outrigger Jo Ladd said she and other paddlers were well prepared for the event.

"We’ve been training four to five times per week since January to help improve their endurance and fitness for the event," she said.

"I’m looking forward to competing with other paddlers from around the world.

"The atmosphere is amazing which makes it a fun and exciting weekend."

The Hamilton Island Cup is known as one of the most competitive outrigger canoe paddling events in the world and this year the organisers have added a surf ski marathon and stand-up paddling to the event schedule.

More than 100 sprint and marathon races will be conducted including the main event, a 42km marathon around a number of Whitsunday islands that will be held on Sunday, June 19.

"We’ve got two change-over teams for the 42km senior masters and mixed opens team," Ladd said.

"We also have three teams training for the 16km race."

The event will be a first for five out of the 40 Whitsunday outriggers who will be competing at the event.
