Prisoner's move questioned

ONGOING trauma arising from the brutal slaying of their son in Toowoomba's infamous triple murder forced Ross and Margaret Thompson to move from the family home in Millmerran.

And news that their son's killer Scott Geoffrey Maygar had been moved into a mental health facility in Wacol in Brisbane's west has left the couple even more nervous.

"The history of security at Wacol is not good," Mr Thompson told The Chronicle yesterday from his new home in Brisbane.

"That he has been put in there does concern me.

"He (Maygar) is an evil person and would think nothing of killing again if he got out."

Maygar, 25, is serving a 30-year sentence for his role in the brutal murders of 17-year-olds Tyson Wilson and David Lyons and Mr Thompson's son Michael, 30, at Michael's unit in North St, North Toowoomba, on the night of May 30, 2005.

Co-offender John Brian Woodman, who was just 16 at the time of the murders, is serving a life sentence while a third teenager, also 16 at the time, was released from custody last year after serving five years in juvenile detention for his role in the murder of Michael Thompson.

Ross Thompson said the tragedy had impacted severely on his family and his wife in particular.

"Margaret didn't handle well living at home every day so we had to move out," he said.

Mr Thompson questions whether Maygar has mental health problems at all.

"I think he's faking it and trying to manipulate the system to make it easier on himself," he said.

"I don't think he should get it easier at all.

"He's just an evil person."

Mr Thompson is general manager of the Queensland Homicide Victims Support Group and worries the state's murder rate is increasing.

"We've had nine murders in Queensland already this year (21012)," he said.

"The world's gone crazy."
