Project wins Wilmar grant

WILMAR's Proserpine sugar mill has got behind a program that is building self-esteem and opportunities for indigenous youth in Proserpine.

Juanita "Wanda" Halden said the High Country Foundation last week received $2000 in funding from Wilmar to host a gathering called One Voice for Our Youth on October 1.

Under the High Country Foundation umbrella the Diamonds Pearls and Rural Girls Project is designed to foster community wellbeing, mental health safety and youth engagement and self-confidence.

"We do this by showcasing community participatory approaches to engagement and wellness. I talk to the young people and ask them 'what do you want to do on this special day'," she said.

"I explain what I have done before and they say 'yeah I like that,' how about we learn how to make beef stroganoff or a desert and I teach them how to look nice in a way which is healthy for their self-image.

"In the future this will help in building confidence when applying for jobs or social engagements."

Ms Halden said local groups will be engaged to provide catering at the event. "We have a connectivity occur because of the event and Wilmar's offering," she said.

Manager of the Proserpine mill, Danny Van der Berg, said Wilmar acknowledged contributing to community organisations also contributed to the region as a whole.

"We understand there is a need. We thought it was something that is worthwhile," he said.

"There are some deep-rooted issues and we are happy to support it.

"We (Wilmar) are proving we are still part of the community. We might be an internationally owned company but we still very much support local communities and what their needs of people are."

The event will see hip-hop workshops, a skin care demonstration, cooking, dancing and a welcome to country.
