Proserpine High pay their respects
FLAGS flew at half mast, silence hung in the air and hands covered hearts at Proserpine State High School this morning.
The honouring of our war veterans began with a solemn service at the school cenotaph, followed by a whole school service in the hall.
School captain Jessica Muller said it was a chance to honour the fallen.
"It's a way to respect those who died for us so we can live in peace," she said.
"And also to celebrate what we have as Australians that was protected by the efforts of the Anzacs, because they really sculpted the Australian identity," fellow captain Logan Donadelli added.
With the school set to march in Monday's parade, Mr Donadelli said it was important to keep the Anzac story alive.
"The only way we can see the commemoration of Anzac Day continue is if we pass it on to our youth and the next generation so they can continue," he said.
"It's a truly timeless event."
Principal Don McDermid agreed, saying it was something the school worked hard to achieve.
"It's important for us to instil those values that are important to our country within our students," he said.
"There's a lot of work done there making sure they show respect for other people."
A number of local veterans turned out for the service, much to the delight of the school.
"I think that's a true reminder for the students of something they probably don't see in their every day lives," Mr McDermid said.
"When you actually get the real people here, I don't think it can get any more real than that."
