IT WAS 99 years ago on Saturday when the guns fells silent in Europe.

At 11am, on the 11th of the 11th, the Proserpine community pauses to remember those who fought for our freedom and all others who have served in Australia's armed forces since.

But this year's Remembrance Day was celebrated with another momentous occasion - the opening of a war exhibit at the Proserpine Museum.

The exhibit has been three years in the making and includes memorabilia relocated from the closed Proserpine RSL club.

The $14,000 government grant awarded to the museum earlier in the year went towards historians travelling from Townsville to categorise and put the artefacts in displays as well as the installation of wall hangings and a television to loop a media presentation.

Proserpine RSL sub-branch vice president Ian Lade who served in Vietnam said the exhibit came about after he was phoned from another museum interested in safe keeping the memorabilia.

"I thought if this part of our history was allowed to go elsewhere Proserpine would miss out on this so I approached our own museum," Mr Lade said.

"All of the things were donated by Proserpine's returned servicemen.

"It's significant that it is unveiled on Remembrance Day because we wouldn't be here now if it wasn't for them serving.

"It belongs in Proserpine and now it has a home I encourage everyone to come and have a look."

The Proserpine RSL meets every second Tuesday of the month at 6pm.
