Proserpine News hot off the press
TWO years in the making, the definitive history of those locals who served during the Second Word War will be launched tomorrow in Proserpine.
When Lyn Burke and Lloyd Fox embarked on their journey they expected to document the service of perhaps 500 people.
But before the book went to press the archive had 970 entries of those who served from Yalboroo to Myowera Camp and out to the Whitsunday islands, from Air Force enlistees that
flew in the Lancaster bombers to Royal Australian Navy and merchant navy recruits.
Ms Burke, who also compiled a World War One book with Mr Fox for the centenary of Anzac in 2015, said the book also documented the service of women who did everything from make caps to drive ambulances.
She said having the book back from the printer after all the hard work, she felt a sense of accomplishment.
"I feel proud for everyone involved and those who have gone above and beyond," she said.
"Its is a real 'wow' moment and I am proud as punch."
Ms Burke thanked Work for the Dole participants who helped with research, and the Family History Centre at Proserpine Community Centre, and was grateful for a Regional Arts and Development grant.
Member for Whitsunday Jason Costigan will officially launch the book at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Main St.
