BACK to back gold medal paralympian David Nicholas alighted from a Virgin flight this afternoon at the Whitsunday Coast Airport to a red carpet and cheers from the waiting crowd.

On the tarmac Nicholas was greeted by his mother Jodie, father David a full complement of staff from the Whitsunday Regional Council including the mayor Andrew Willcox.

Upon arrival in the terminal Nicholas was greeting by more than 50 well-wishers that cheered and took photos.

Nicholas had but one word to describe his reception: "incredible".

"I have no words to describe the feeling. It's special," he said.

Cr Willcox said he was proud to welcome Nicholas home.

"It's just awesome. He has won back-to-back gold medals now. It doesn't get much better," he said.

"And he is such a humble bloke. He didn't want a big street parade, he has got on with the job and done it. We couldn't be prouder."

The sentiment was echoed by Nicholas' father David Nicholas senior.

"We are super happy. We can't really say how proud of him we are. He has worked very hard over the last several years and it's good that he has got a result," he said.

"He has a few setbacks so to come away with the gold is awesome.

"It's a great reception and something you wouldn't really expect. We didn't realise so many people would be here and interested.

"They said they would have a red carpet but I thought that was just a figure of speech. They actually had a red carpet," he said.

There will be a civic reception for Nicholas from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday, October 8 in Proserpine.
