Teacher's shot at big time
WHITSUNDAYS Mixed Martial Artist Anton Zafir has been hand selected from thousands to attend a final trial in Sydney for the Australian television version of 'The Ultimate Fighter'.
Zafir most recently competed and won at Fight Night Four held at the Whitsunday PCYC earlier this year and is vying for one of 16 spots available on the hit reality television series, which has launched the career of several Ultimate Fighting Championship superstars. The first ever Australian version of the Ultimate Fighter will give Aussie and British mixed martial artists the opportunity to secure a lucrative contract with the world's pre-eminent mixed martial arts (MMA) organisation.
A teacher at Proserpine State High School, Zafir has slowly risen through the MMA ranks and was put through his paces this week at intense private try-outs for the show.
"I really want to make the most of this opportunity, it's a great chance for me to further my career in MMA and I'm really hoping I make it through and get to feature in the show."
After recently opening the Whitsunday Martial Arts centre in Cannonvale with close friend and fellow mixed martial artist Dan Zealand, Zafir hopes to launch a career in the sport he loves. "Even if I don't make it through its great exposure and it will help make me a better fighter."
