Proserpine to recycle with rubbish drop off
For years the question of curb side recycling has been raised and rebutted.
Now, a grass roots group has taken action.
Proserpine Youth Space last week became the town's first drop off point for ACT Whitsundays, a collection of locals aiming to reduce our environmental footprint.
"We're supposed to look after our environment and the youth are the ones who are going to be left with what we destroy," Proserpine Youth Space coordinator Donna Lawrence said.
"They're only going to start looking after it if we lead by example."
ACT Whitsundays' Barb Adamson said it was all born out of a make-it-happen community attitude.
"You have to have a starting point," she said.
"ACT Whitsundays is giving people the lazy way to do it I guess."
It's not just about saving our environment however, with our hip pocket to be hit if our natural wonders disappear under rubbish.
"Almost all our local industries revolve around...where we live and if we don't look after it we won't have it," Ms Adamson said.
Recycling can be dropped off to council's waste facilities, but Ms Adamson said not everyone was able to get to the dump.
"So if you don't have a car you can take your recycling when you go shopping and drop it in the (ACT) bins," she said.
"The idea is to have bins in areas that people can walk to."
Continuing in the theme of education to eradicate waste, local schools who get on board can win $1000 for their school thanks to Colgate.
"The kids are being taught to save their tooth paste tubes, their boxes, and their tooth brushes," Ms Adamson said.
"They can be recycled and made into garden seats and all that sort of great stuff. It's an excellent way to teach kids to start recycling."
