Prossie river the spot to be

WE'RE in for some fine fishing over the coming week, with solid reports from all angling areas according to local fishing guru Bob Spees.

Mr Spees said the islands were still proving productive for mackerel.

"They're down deep," he said.

"Try live baits or dropping metal jigs down deep."

Places like South Molle and Long islands are ones to watch this week, with good tides bringing the jewfish on the bite.

Mr Spees said using fresh squid after dark was best.

"And again, the deeper the water the better your chances," he said.

Around the fringing reefs, coral trout are biting.

"And on fresh prawns or crab bait they're getting some very good bluebone," Mr Spees said.

In the deeper holes around Shute Harbour there have been some very nice finger mark late in the afternoon and on daylight.

"They're best caught using live or fresh squid and putting it down deep," Mr Spees said.

"These fish spook easily during the day."

The creeks around Funnel Bay and Shute Harbour are producing some nice barramundi.

Mr Spees said Cannonvale Beach had seen some nice flathead and grunter.

"But the main spot for your grunter is the rockwall off the sailing club," he said.

"They've had some good numbers of fish and some good sizes."

The rockwalls have also seen a few barramundi on the bite.

"This time of year it always pays to have a flick for the barramundi," Mr Spees said.

Try heading down on daylight, as in the "middle of the day it's very hard to get one".

The Proserpine River is one to watch this week, with Mr Spees saying fishing should improve on the back of coming good tides.

"That should be one of your top spots for this weekend," Mr Spees said.

Things are looking up in the dam as well.

"There's some nice fish being caught up at the dam along the edge of the weed beds," Mr Spees said.

Mr Spees recommended using weedless soft plastics.

"A good time to do that is the early hours of the morning when it's nice and quiet," he said.

With the coming full moon, Mr Spees said it was well worth trolling the main basin.

Try getting as close to the weed beds as possible with 5m divers.
