Prossie sisters set for triathlon
TRIATHLON: The Colorbond Airlie Beach Triathlon is on this Sunday and Proserpine sisters Emma and Kasey Hogan are ready to take up the challenge.
Emma, 16, and Kasey, 13, have been entering triathlons for the past five years and they both say it's something they enjoy.
Emma has fallen in love with triathlons and will take up the sprint triathlon this Sunday. Facing a 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run, it's something she needs to be well prepared for but she isn't phased.
"I like the atmosphere of a triathlon. I like the fact you race anybody and everybody and it's really fun," she said.
"It's better than swimming. Triathlons are really exciting. You get to go a lot of places with it and do a lot of different courses."
Emma has participated in events across Queensland, including triathlons at Bowen, Mackay, Hamilton Island, Townsville, Gold Coast and Harvey Bay. She said that her local race had some of the best scenery.
"I like the course - it's a really good course. You get to run along the boardwalk and out over the ocean. It's really pretty," she said.
Sister Kasey will be participating in the Enticer Triathlon, which is a 350m swim, 10km cycle and 2.5km run. She said she liked to win.
"I like getting the prizes," she said. "It's a good environment and all my friends do it."
Mum Kim Hogan has also hopped on board with her and her husband Colin's Proserpine Pies and Pastries store donating bread to the event.
"Anything we can do to help - it's a good thing," Kim said.
"They're (Emma and Kasey) good at all three things.
"They've been swimmers for their entire lives. Since they could walk they've been swimming."
Kim said her daughters had really put the effort into triathlons.
"They love it, they do really like it," she said.
"Emma trains hard. She trains on her own. Everything she gets out of it, she puts in. Kasey does the same."
Kim said the whole family liked to stay fit and was more than welcome to help out where they can.
"It's a friendly fit environment and I'm happy for them to do this," she said. "I love it. It's what they want to do. It's a great environment to be involved in. It's a great event, look where it is, you go to the lagoon you're looking at the Whitsunday Islands. Its just a beautiful location to have a triathlon."
Online registration closes for the triathlon at midnight, Thursday, August 25. New entries will be accepted on Saturday, August 27 but there will be no new entries on race day.
