Prossie station to get a facelift

A $1.85 MILLION upgrade to Queensland Rail infrastructure will see a newly refurbished rail depot in Proserpine and the employment of local tradespeople.

Assistant Transport Minister Glenn Butcher, who was in town last week, said $600,000 would be put towards the Proserpine depot which was expected to be complete by the end of this year.

"Proserpine station has been given a $150,000 face lift, with a carpark upgrade, new walls and re-tiling, which has revitalised the station precinct,” he said.

"The next step is to upgrade the adjoining depot, which will involve demolishing demountable buildings from the 1980s, to make way for more modern facilities.”

Whitsunday Mayor Andrew Willcox said several local tradespeople would be employed for the project.

"We have currently got two really important projects going on in Bowen and in Proserpine that are going to deliver jobs and increased capacity for our local area,” he said.

"It's great to see the investment here in the Whitsunday region and I'm sure these new depots will serve North Queensland well for many years to come.”

As part of the new Queensland Rail infrastructure, a $900,000 signalling depot being built in Bowen will create seven new permanent jobs along with several contractor jobs during construction.

Cr Willcox said he was grateful to the Palaszczuk Labor Government.

"The Whitsunday Regional Council wants to thank the Palaszczuk Government for this initiative,” he said.

"It's very important the State Government supports small regional communities like us and that's what's happening.”

Cr Willcox said money would also be spent on shade, solar and refurbishing parks, which would see even more locals employed.
