VOLLEYBALL: Proserpine State High School's boys and girls volleyball teams have taken on the best in the state.

The students took on the three-day Senior Schools Volleyball Cup competition in Toowoomba late last week, contesting division two.

"Within those divisions were five pools of four to five teams each," coach Ben Smith said.

"In each of their pools, the boys won two out of five and the girls won four out of six games," Smith said.

"This placed the boys in equal second on points but they were bumped to fourth on set ratios," he said.

"The girls narrowly won their last game of the round to push their way to third place.

"Overall in their division two competition, the boys finished 14th and the girls won four straight to take out ninth position."

Smith said he was proud of the efforts of both teams, who stood up against much bigger schools from around Queensland.

"The competition was a good way to consolidate the hard work of the students, who undertake volleyball as part of their curriculum," he said.

"To see what they could achieve in a short period of time was fantastic and to know that a regional school can mix it with the metropolitan schools was a fantastic boost to the future of volleyball at Prossie high."

From the success of the Senior Schools Volleyball Cup, Smith and PSS hope to continue with the senior program but also incorporate a junior team for next year's event.
