Prossie's station is back
AFTER Cyclone Debbie ripped off the local Proserpine radio station antenna and threw it into a cane field, My88FM is back and ready and raring to go.
New station coordinator Phil Dalton said the station's charter was to promote indigenous issues as well as health, education, youth employment, sports, arts, music and entertainment at a local level as well as state and national.
A proud Arrernte man, Mr Dalton said he was relatively new to the area but due to his background as a skateboarder for 30 years, he had extensive experience in engaging youth and was keen to support the community.
After Debbie, the station has been simulcasting their sister station My105 from Mackay, with a plan to be broadcasting locally with local content around Christmas time.
"We play a bit of music and engage the local community,” Mr Dalton said.
"I want people to know we are back up and running and we are here for the community.”
The future looks bright as Mr Dalton hopes to expand the radio's repertoire to include local history, music, indigenous languages and speaking to local elders, identities, council members and politicians with the intention of raising the local community profile and helping the town more forward into the future.
My88FM is looking for volunteers and will be working to provide media training and work experience for youth.
