Proud mother recalls our Nathan’s game-winning try

FROM country footy in Proserpine to the bright lights of ANZ Stadium in Sydney, former junior Brahman Nathan Barrett capped an unbelievable journey on Wednesday night to score the match-winning try in the under-16s State of Origin game.

The 16-year-old scored with just minutes left to lift Queensland to a memorable 10-6 victory in the curtain raiser to Game 1.

Nathan's parents, Kerry and Jason Barrett, as well as brother Josh, made the journey south to watch the second rower complete one of football's fairytales

"From a mother's point of view I was nervous as hell. They were big boys," Kerry said.

"He got absolutely creamed at one point.

"He hit the ball up and got the biggest tackle but he bounced straight back up again.

"A minute later Nathan tackled the same guy, picked up the ball and ran to the other side (of the field).

"Two sets later he got it and broke through to score the try."

Cue mad celebrations from all Queensland parents, especially the Barretts.

"I wasn't sitting. I was jumping and dancing, carrying on like a pork chop," Kerry said.

"I felt for him after all he has gone through since he broke his thumb last year.

"He's had some big hiccups in his football (including a shoulder injury).

"That made his year... he's still over the moon."

Nathan started the game on the bench but was put into the thick of the action 12 minutes into the first half.

"He didn't get to touch the ball in the first half but because he pushed across in his defence they kept him on in the second half," Kerry explained.
