Proud swimming nation disappointed

SWIMMING Australia has reacted to the disappointment of winning just one Olympic gold medal in the pool in London by ordering an independent review.

The review, to be conducted by former Olympic gold medallist Susie O'Neill and coach Bill Sweetenam, will focus on Swimming Australia's high performance programs and administration.

Ms O'Neill was critical of the work ethic of Australian swimmers while commentating for Foxtel.

Former leading Australian swimmers, including two-time Olympian Geoff Huegill, have been critical of the culture within the current Australian swimming team.

The 10-medal haul in London by Australia's swimmers was the worst result since Barcelona in 1992.

Swimming Australia president David Urquhart said he was proud of the swimmers, whose commitment could not be questioned.

"All of them are proud to represent their country and have done their best in an incredibly competitive swim meet," Mr Urquhart said.

"It is clear the world has lifted the bar when it comes to swimming and so must we.

"The review's terms of reference will me made public after being developed by the Swimming Australia board at the conclusion of the Paralympic Games.

"This is not a time for blame and scape-goating, this is an opportunity to make the changes required to rise to the international challenge," he said.

"We are a proud swimming nation, we have a proud history and have the swimming talent and coaches to be the best in the world."
