Public weighs in on planning

A SUBMISSION on the Proserpine Master Plan received strong engagement on social media last week.

Desni Knight Wilkins posted a submission from an anonymous source which makes a number of suggestions on what can be done to improve the town of Proserpine.

Recommendations included a "beautification upgrade of the Main St” including "fresh gardens and sculptures depicting Proserpine's sugar cane heritage” and taking advantage of the showground by offering cheap overnight caravan accommodation "with the view to enticing travellers to stay longer than one night by marketing some of the attractions around here”.

Andrew Webb responded to the post by stating "the sugar cane heritage idea is great”.

"Yes I know that it is not 'unique' to here but it is (the) reason that Proserpine exists,” he wrote.

Maree Cook however objected to cheap camping at the showground. "Councils should not offer cheap fees on anything that competes with other business. That is lose/lose,” she said.

Shane Beyer told Facebook users: "this Council is not interested in cheap accommodation for anyone or making a cheap stay easy. Grey nomads, 4WDers or backpackers, that is why so many people just go past because if they look at the caravan and camping website they will miss our region due to our reputation. Pity but true.”
